German Chancellor Merkel on farewell Western Balkans trip

TIRANA, Sept 9 /ATA/ – German Chancellor Angela Merkel will make a farewell trip to the Western Balkans on September 13 and 14.

Merkel will arrive in Tirana, where she will meet Prime Minister Edi Rama on September 14 and will hold bilateral talks with the heads of government of Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

German Chancellor will first visit Belgrade on September 13.

The German government spokesperson Martina Fietz said that Chancellor Merkel will meet with civil society organizations from the six Western Balkan countries in Belgrade.

Common Regional Market

Asked by DW about the Chancellor’s expectations from her last Western Balkans trip, German government spokeswoman Martina Fietz said that the Chancellor will also discuss the common regional market initiative. She recalled the fact that all Western Balkan countries have pledged during their last virtual conference chaired by Chancellor Merkel, on July 5, that they will commit to its implementation.

Fietz said that talks will focus on this topic, and she declined to go over details about the Chancellor’s position regarding the recent Open Balkan initiative launched by the leaders of Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia.
