Cucumber exports increased 33,6 % in value

TIRANA, Aug 15 /ATA/ Foreign markets are increasing demand for “Made in Albania” agricultural products, dominated by tomatoes and cucumbers in addition to other products.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, exports of Albanian agricultural products and especially fruits and vegetables continue to record double-digit growth.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Milva Ekonomi, said that this 7-month period the export of cucumber has marked an increase in value of 33.6% compared to the same period a year ago.

“Cucumber exports are estimated during the period January-July of this year at 1,368 million ALL from 1,029 million ALL that was for the same period of 2020,” Ekonomi said.

The increase in exports of agricultural products is attributed to investments made in the agricultural sector, especially in greenhouses that create an advantage for Albania.

Albania boasts about 1700 hectares of greenhouses and plastic tunnels for the production of agricultural products.

The agricultural sector is among the sectors with the largest contribution to Gross Domestic Product, about 20%. 2013 saw about 125 thousand ha of cultivated land, while today the cultivated surface area has grown to 250 thousand ha.

Thanks to government’s support policies, exports of agricultural products have quadrupled.
