Metani: Justice reform restored public confidence in justice system

TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ The High Justice Inspector, Artur Metani, stated on Wednesday that “justice reform has begun its journey and there is no turning back. This reform is one of the largest undertakings for democracy and the rule of law in Albania.”

In his speech at the conference hosted by the Albanian Helsinki Committee for monitoring the work of the High Prosecution Council (HPC) and the High Judicial (HJC) over a span of one year, Metani said that “it is one of the deepest constitutional, legal and institutional reforms that has delivered a significant impact on the justice system not only in our country, but undoubtedly one of the most sweeping reforms compared to other justice systems.

“Implementing the reform, the new constitutional organization of the justice system, the new competencies and moreover, the new philosophy of exercising these competencies, is not at all easy. It is not because the establishment and setting to operation the new institutions was and continues to remain a challenge for many reasons, some not within the reach of new institutions. Justice reform, however, is a process of sweeping change, which takes its time to achieve the ends for which it was conceived and designed. However, I think that the new justice bodies are up and running, they have started to exercise their competencies to the greatest extent, they have started to produce concrete results, ” – said Metani.

Metani further stated that “the process of reforming the justice system and the functioning of the new bodies, their efficiency and success and enforcement of law in Albania require intensive and continuous support and cooperation between these bodies, but also the involvement of academics, experts, civil society organizations, the media and our international partners such as the EU and the US, who have supported this reform not only financially, but also contributed to introducing a new way of thinking, a new mindset in order to root out corruption and impunity in Albania ”.

He put the emphasis on ongoing cooperation between the new bodies of justice system and civil society organizations.
