Progress in priority areas/ Dutch parliament agrees to back first intergovernmental conference with Albania

TIRANA, June 16 /ATA/ – The majority in parliament of the Netherlands agreed Wednesday to back opening of the first intergovernmental conference with Albania following approval of the negotiating framework, Dutch Embassy in Tirana said.

The Embassy of Netherlands said in a press statement that “a debate session took place in Dutch parliament today to discuss EU integration and enlargement, and Albania’s bid and the Netherlands position at the Council’s meeting on June 22 were also discussed.”

Dutch Embassy stated in its press release that “the Dutch government policy regarding EU enlargement process is strict, fair and supportive.”

“Decisions on further steps to be taken regarding EU accession are based on individual merits of the countries. In March 2020, the European Council decided to open negotiations with Albania and to hold the First Intergovernmental Conference of the 27 EU member states with Albania, after a series of conditions were met mainly in the area of rule of law,” the Embassy said in its press statement.

“Dutch government agrees on the findings of the European Commission as stipulated on the updated Progress Report on Albania. Albania has made progress in priority areas, including justice system reform and the fight against organized crime and corruption,” the press statement read, adding: “the Dutch government may agree to hold the First Intergovernmental Conference with Albania, once the negotiating framework is approved.”
