Strawberries exported to international market for industrial processing

TIRANA, June 11 /ATA/ After about four months since the strawberries produced in the Albanian market started to be sold in European markets at very high prices, competing strongly with traditional producing countries, the remaining product in the greenhouses is being collected these days.

The director of the Agency for Agricultural and Rural Development, Frida Krifca, announced that this amount of production at the end of the season is being exported for industrial processing, while the price still remains favorable for farmers.

“Strawberries are being exported for industrial processing in international markets and at the end of the season the strawberries were collected from farmers yesterday at 70 lek / kg”, said Krifca.

The strawberry market, once supplied at the extent of almost 90% by imports, today has become a potential for export to EU countries and beyond.

Agriculture is among the sectors with the largest contribution to Gross Domestic Product, about 20%. In Albania in 2013 about 125 thousand ha of land were cultivated, while today 250 thousand ha of land are cultivated.

Thanks to the govt.’s stimulus policies, the exports of agricultural crops have increased fourfold.
