National Day / New justice seeds sprouting roots, early fruits developing

TIRANA, May 10 /ATA/ – The Head of the High Prosecutorial Council Gent Ibrahimi said in his remarks at an event on Monday that the constitutional changes and the justice reform package in 2016 have sown the seeds of the country’s new justice and it is yielding its first results.

Addressing a ceremony on the National Day of Justice, the Chairman of the Prosecutorial Council said that the new justice bodies should not delay “the fruits of this crucial reform.”

“Although we officially live under the Constitution of ’98, we have a new Constitution of 2016. I am not saying anything new if I say that the Constitution of 2016 re-established justice on totally new basis,” Ibrahimi said.

According to him, “since that date, representatives of political institutions,  the government, the President’s Office have abdicated from issues of justice.”

“Today, justice is co-governed by magistrates and high representatives of the Parliament to depoliticize and make justice system independent, without compromising what is called the other side of the coin, the accountability of those who govern justice. The reform was complemented by the rationalization of the work of the Courts and Prosecutions. The new map of governing institutions, which includes the High Judicial Council, the High Prosecution Council, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the High Inspectorate of Justice, best embodies the bold concept that institutional constraints must go hand in hand with accountability mechanisms,” Ibrahimi said.
