TIRANA, April 30 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – The State’s Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi announced Friday the preliminary results and the list of candidates expected to take seats in the new parliament following the April 25 general elections in Albania.
In a press conference, Celibashi said that roughly three fourth of the votes cast for the four parliamentary parties had also a preferential MP candidate.
He noted that around 74.75% of the voters backing the ruling Socialist Party have also cast a vote for their preferred MP candidates, while 76.71% of voters of the opposition Democratic Party-led alliance have also expressed their preference for the candidates from this political group.
Commenting on the high number of invalid ballots, Celibashi noted that this fact needs to be thoroughly examined, however noting that the central election body had launched a campaign to inform voters.
“Around 83,000 ballots are invalid. A more complete examination is needed to determine whether the ballot paper itself lead to such a high number of invalid votes. In most of the invalid ballots, citizens have voted either for two different political parties, or a certain party and candidates from another political party,” he said.
He noted that e-voting would ensure that number of invalid votes is zero.
The 140 seats will be distributed as follows: SP 74 seats, DP 59 seats, SMI 4 seats, and SDP 3 seats.
