Vjosa Osmani elected Kosovo President

PRISTINA, April 4 /ATA/ – The Kosovo Assembly voted in Vjosa Osmani as the new President of Kosovo after she received 69 votes in the third and final round of voting at a session attended by 82 MPs on Sunday.

The first round of the vote was repeated twice after the failure to reach the constitutionally required quorum of 80 MPs for the vote to be valid. The first attempt at a ballot saw 78 MPs participate, while the second reached 79, one short of making the vote legally valid.

A former Assembly Speaker and LDK candidate for Prime Minister, Osmani served as acting president between November 2020 and March 2021 after President Hashim Thaci resigned to face an indictment for war crimes at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Vjosa Osmani has been elected as Kosovo’s fifth president since the country declared independence in 2008.
