“Evangelization” icon by Athanas Zografi dates back to 1760-1780

TIRANA, February 5 /ATA/ The icon of “Evangelization”, originating from the church of the same name in Tirana, is attributed to iconographer Athanas Zografi from Korça by origin.

The icon is thought to have been realized in the years 1760-1780.

The Museum of Medieval Art in Korça said that the icon of “Evangelization” is a typical example of the weakness that painters had at that time for Western models in styling and the baroque spirit.

The Virgin is seated on a throne decorated and carved in the Baroque style. Archangel Gabriel with his shiny dress flowing from behind, stands on a cloud descending with his left foot to create a beautiful atmosphere. He holds in his right hand a white lily to present it to the Virgin Mary and pointing with his left hand to the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove).

Luxurious dresses and lace materials show the author’s preferences for rich decorations. On the balconies of tall buildings stand the prophets David and Solomon who are often present in the evangelistic scenes./p.s./
