TIRANA, Nov 28 /ATA/ – Red and Black colours dominate all over Albania today on November 28, as the country celebrates the declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire 108 years ago. The November 28, also known as the Flag Day, is a very important day for Albanian nation, Albanian citizens all over Albanian territories and the Diaspora all over the world.
This date marks two milestone events in the country’s history. On November 28, 1443, our national hero hero Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg liberated Kruja from Ottoman rule and raised national flag in Kruja Castle.
While on November 28, 1912, Ismail Qemali raised national flag in the southern coastal city of Vlora and proclaimed Albania a sovereign and independent state.
The President of the Republic Ilir Meta extended his Independence Day and National Flag Day greetings, calling for increased efforts to “make Albania as the whole Europe.’
“Let’s all work and commit each day to defend our sacred and uniting symbol, make our national flag proudly wave in these territories, clear and pure, like the blood of the nation’s sons and daughters. 108 years are sufficient to demonstrate maturity and seriousness of a modern state to deliver without any delay on the people’s aspiration and mission launched on November 28, 1912 by Ismail Bej Vlora and the founding fathers of Independence to make Albania as the whole Europe,” President Meta said in his message.
Prime Minister Edi Rama also extended his best wishes on the 108th anniversary of Albania’s Independence, citing a quote by Ismail Qemali: “Our Flag in our free homeland. Long live the Flag! Long live Albania.”
