Crime rates on decrease/ Lleshaj: Security and public order, at their best level in last three decades

TIRANA, Nov 16 /ATA/ – I. Vata/ Minister of Interior, Sander Lleshaj, summoned by the opposition MPs in a Q&A session on Monday’s plenary session, put the emphasis on political support for police in its fight against crime rather than playing politics with crime at the expense of police. He went on saying that public order and security indicators are at the best level in the last three decades. ”

“The public order and security in Albania have reached the best level ever in the last three decades,” he said.
With regard to serious crimes, Lleshaj pointed out that the police performance is on a positive trajectory. January- October 2020, according to him, recorded 27727 penal offences as compared to 29583 one year ago.

“Regarding the serious crime, 2020 sees a significant reduction in the number of serious crimes in the country. For this period, 332 crimes were registered in the field of property, only one case of bank robbery, 7 domestic violence crimes compared to 14 in the previous year. The crime of murder is pursuing a downward trend. “If 2012 recorded 126 victims, 2019 recorded 58 fatalities and 2020 only 44,” said Lleshaj.

He added that homicide rate in Albania is 1.7 per 100 thousand inhabitants compared to the EU average of 1.2.

Lleshaj added that “with regard to road safety issues, there is a positive development.” 2020 was declared the year of road safety. If 2012 recorded 334 fatalities in road accidents, 2019 recorded 227 ones, while 2020 recorded 153, which is a significant reduction in the number of road accident fatalities. ”

Regarding organized crime, Lleshaj said that relevant structures have incessantly cracked down on organized crime in order to narrow the space of crime in Albania.

“In 2019, 23 criminal syndicates were dismantled, of which 30 in 2020, a success has been applauded in the last report of the European Commission,” he said.
