Korça, “St. Sava and St. Varvara” icon restored

TIRANA, September 29/ATA/ Every day, in the Laboratory of the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korça, there is work done with the same intensity in the restoration, consolidation and return of the previous values, hidden for centuries, under the layers of varnish.

In the process of restoration is the icon “St. Sava and St. Varvara”, made in the tempera technique on a walnut wood panel consisting of two planks.

The National Museum of Medieval Art stated that, “The panel is badly damaged by wood-eating insects and is divided into two parts. Conservation interventions first began with joining and consolidation of the panel, the replacement of damaged transverses and will continue later with the consolidation of the grout, the removal of oxidized varnish, the aesthetic retouching with watercolour paints and the new varnishing.”

Today, in the Museum of Medieval Art will be opened the exhibition “Restorations”, which brings to attention, some of the restored works, which show the great work of the experts of the laboratory of the Museum.

With a fund of 8000 icons and objects of religious character, the National Museum of Medieval Art, thanks to its contemporary construction, is one of the most important destinations of our cultural heritage./k.s//a.a/p.s./
