WHO Representative: Total lockdown reinstatement not an option as long as people abide by protective rules

TIRANA, July 10 /ATA/ – The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Representative and Head of Country Office in Albania, Bettina Menne, said in a televised interview on Friday that a recent spike in the new COVID-19 cases in Albania is disturbing and they show a high number of infected people around everyone.

“The number of new COVID-19 cases has increased over the past four weeks, to around 80 to 90 cases a day. Disturbing enough is the fact that 35 to 36 coronavirus-related fatalities have been recorded over the past two weeks, higher than the total number of deaths in the first two months of the pandemic. So, there are many individuals around us who are infected, yet they show no symptoms. This means that community infection is happening especially in big cities of the country,” she said.

The WHO official said that fresh infections could grow further in the country because of a high number of infected people, adding that the increasing the number of people needing hospitalization and the growing number of deaths are worrisome, especially when some of the patients in serious condition are under 60 years old.

According to her, the situation in Albania, other countries in the Balkans and the in the European Union remains disturbing, because the virus is still with us and it could affect anyone of us if we fail to respect protective measures and rules.
