TIRANA, July 10 /ATA/ – By A. Fortuzi/ DP head, Lulzim Basha, stated on Friday that Edi Rama has ditched in essence the June 5 agreement on electoral reform following his statement that he agrees to the request of parliamentary opposition to open the lists.
“In essence, Rama today spoiled the June 5 agreement, in which political forces invested their time and commitment with the mediation of the EU and the US. This agreement contained consensual approval of the Electoral Reform that would meet a condition for the opening of accession negotiations. We as the opposition in these 7 months have done everything to reach a consensual agreement, ” – Basha told a news briefing.
“Today’s discussion is not about the open lists, is about pre-electoral coalitions which from the onset of democracy have been a political reality stipulated in the Constitution. Rama is afraid of running against an electoral coalition in elections. The masks have fallen off after making up an alibi with the support of a group of people who do not represent any of the opposition parties,” Basha said.
Basha said that DP has never ruled out the discussion on the system. We stand for two chamber majority to make sure that no PM will resemble Rama who controls all the governments. We are willing to enter into discussion, but not with Balla in the shoes of opposition, but with all Albanians. We support a referendum in this regard,’ Basha said.
“If Rama were pretty interested in the open lists, he would not have waited for a horse-trading at the end of July, when OSCE two days ago dismissed it as a flagrant violation to the detriment of free and fair elections. Albania should not be held back by Rama. June 5 agreement is explicitly clear. There is no consensus to change the system. It is not because we were against, but because Rama supported depoliticization. All he wants is to drop pre-electoral coalitions,” Basha said.
