TIRANA, June 30 /ATA/ – By Gjergji Mima/ The US ambassador, Yuri Kim, and the Head of EU Delegation in Tirana, Luigi Soreca, held on Tuesday a meeting with Vitore Tusha, the chairwoman of Justice Appointments Council.
Ambassador Kim expressed her highest appreciation for Tusha and all the judges and prosecutors who have passed the Vetting.
“I highly appreciate the Judge Tusha for her determination to implement the Justice Reform. The U.S. strongly supports her and other judges and prosecutors who have passed the Vetting. It’s time for institutions to step up and show independence and integrity, “Kim said.
While Ambassador Soreca stressed that “a functioning Constitutional Court is a key condition for EU accession talks, as well as for democracy and stability in Albania.”
The role of JAC to expedite the process is crucial. We expect a quick assessment and the ranking of candidates for the three vacancies on the Constitutional Court. The opinion of the Venice Commission is an opportunity to agree on how to proceed to ensure a functioning Constitutional Court, which is the only institution that can interpret the Constitution and adjudicate constitutional disputes, ” Soreca said.
“The spirit of Justice Reform is, first and foremost, about self-government and independence. The JAC was established for this purpose and the ranking and evaluation of candidates must be professional and independent. The role of JAC 2020 is to consolidate the institution and its practices, as well as to ensure that the public has full confidence in the process and decisions, ” the head of the EU delegation in Tirana said.
