Tomini: Coronavirus gaining ground due to failure to respect physical distancing measures

TIRANA, June 16 /ATA/- By A. Fortuzi/ – The Head of Epidemiology at the Institute of Public Health, Eugena Tomini, on Tuesday reiterated her appeal to citizens to comply with the social distancing and self-isolation measures as the only effective ways to slow the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

She underlined that an increase in the number of fresh infections was expected as the country reopened earlier this month following a two-month isolation, but she called for heighten attention and strict enforcement of the measures, saying the failure to respect the social and physical distancing rules is to be blamed for a spike in the new confirmed cases over past two weeks.

“The virus has gained ground due to failure to respect the safety measures. There is a current upward trend in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases. We expected the numbers to increase with the business reopening. However, it is better for everyone to recall how the quarantine was and decide to respect the safety distance so that the lockdown is not restored again,” Tomini said.

She said that the new increased infections are not result of a second wave of the outbreak. Tomini also noted that around 20 percent of the hospitalized patients show mild symptoms, whereas the rest are in more serious condition and need more intense and specialized treatment.
