TIRANA, June 2 /ATA/ In addition to expansion of cycling infrastructure, the municipality of Tirana has also started educating children on ecological modes of transport and promoting cycling in the city.
On the Bicycles Day, Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj joined dozens of children, who are learning the rules of road traffic in the special space created at “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard.
Veliaj said that the “Bicycle Academy” which is slated to open any time soon aims to educate children on the rules of road traffic and ecological modes of transport.
“The month of June is dedicated to children. We have not only “Rinia” park and others, but also public spaces, which will become children friendly. In cooperation with the APR, the Municipal Police and cycling enthusiasts in Tirana, we will open the bicycles academy; it has operated on a periodic basis, but from now one will be permanent under the name ‘Bicycle Academy.’ We are launching a project to learn bicycle riding in daycares and kindergartens, Veliaj said.
In this space, children will have the opportunity to learn to ride a bicycle every weekend. There will be a space near “Mother Teresa” square, or this space between the Palace of Congresses and the President’s seat, or at “Italia” square, which has already become a bicycle square, as a fantastic space where all the children of Tirana can learn to ride the two-wheelers in order to have a cleaner city and live a healthy lifestyle, ” he said.
The restrictions on movement of vehicles as a result of COVID-19 spread proved that the initiative of Tirana municipality to expand cycling and sidewalks infrastructure was just.
