TIRANA, May 5/ATA/- May 5 is a marked date for Albanians as the Martyrs of the Nation are commemorated.
On the Day of the Martyrs of the Nation, there are many names of all times that are remembered with gratitude not only for the eternal values and contribution they made for the liberation of the country and for a better future, but also for all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom, democracy, human rights and the dignity of every Albanian.
Different from the previous years, due to the measures taken in the fight against coronavirus, today there will be put only flower wreaths at the Martyrs’ Cemetery.
The Martyrs’ Day originated on May 5, 1942, when Qemal Stafa was killed becoming a symbol of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War.
In the 1960s, the status of the martyr was further elaborated and expanded, specifying the term “Martyr of the Fatherland”. This law also includes the Cemetery of the Martyrs of the Homeland, which were built in all the centers of the districts of the country. The Cemetery of the Martyrs of the Fatherland in Tirana was also built with the monument “Mother Albania”.
In 1992-1993, with the change of the political system, the status of the Homeland Martyr also changed.
In 2000, law no. 8607 dated 27.04, “Status of the Martyr of the Fatherland”, includes the martyrs of all historical periods, even the fallen in the years 1997-1999, in Albania and in the Kosovo Liberation War. /a.g/p.s./
