German October, Berlin Wall in art

TIRANA, October 21/ATA/- During the German October, there was an event devoted to artistic strategies of subversion in art and activism in context of the Berlin Wall: from the Fluxus actions in the 60ies, to the 80s graffiti and Underground-Super-8 films and up to contemporary interventions held in Tirana in framework of the German October.

Marie Arleth Skov, a Berlin-based Danish art historian and Berlin curator and cultural expert Lutz Henke analyzed during the event held in Tirana their aesthetic and methodical approaches to artists working against, on or with the Wall, thus being in an artistic confrontation with the Wall – as a symbol and material fact.

For decades, the artists have been reacting in a unique way to the Berlin Wall, but also to the concept of barriers as a whole, and they do so making use of artistic tools such as the absurd and the fantasy, with ironic “decorations” and destruction.

Some examples taken up for discussion were the works of Joseph Beuys, Allan Kaprow, Rainer Fetting, G.L. Gabrie, Die Tödliche Doris, Notorische Reflexe, Gordon Matta Clark, Keith Haring, Stephan Elsner, Wermke / Leinkauf as well as p.t.t.red.

This event was held at the Zeta Gallery in cooperation with the German Embassy in Tirana. It was conducted in English and was free to enter./a.a/ /a.g/p.s./
