TIRANA, October 9 /ATA/ – European Union Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Albanian Interior Minister, Sandër Lleshaj on Wednesday signed a joint counter-terrorism action plan aimed at stepping up cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
Speaking at a press conference following the signing ceremony, Avramopoulos said the deal marked an important achievement in the cooperation with Albania.
“Albania is the first West Balkans partners to sign the counter-terrorism implementation arrangement. This agreement will allow Albania to demonstrate tangible engagement and progress on security issues. We discussed these issues with the Prime Minister of Albania at one of our previous visits and we agreed to speed up the procedures to achieve this moment,” Avramopouls said.
The Commissioner said that during his mandate, progress has been made regarding the cooperation with Albania. “This cooperation has shown positive results and has significantly contributed to the increased seizure of the illegal border crossing between Greece and Albania,” the Commissioner said.
