TIRANA, Sept 28 /ATA/- Construction of the modern port of Durres began in the late 1920s, simultaneously with the construction of institutions and road infrastructure in the central part of the ancient city.
For hundreds of years, passenger vessels and freighter docked on two wooden bridges, or waited for unloading boats to come in the port of Durres.
The reconstruction and expansion of the port started in 1928 by Italian firm “Mazzorana” encompassing almost all the current surface of our country’s largest port.
The creation of the quays and basins, and the dredging works in the port continued until 1934. At the same period of time, buildings were constructed at the main entrance of the port, where the Port Authority administration is partly located to date.
The entry buildings and a part of port infrastructure have been built on the basis of an urban plan right after the 1926 earthquake that struck the ancient city.
