TIRANA, June 24 /ATA/-The Acting Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Euroasian Affairs Philip T. Reeker held a phone conversation with Prime Minister Edi Rama last week.
Rama-Reeker phone conversation was reported by “Top Channel” and it is confirmed by two diplomatic sources as well as the prime minister’s office.
Mr. Reeker insisted during the 20-minute phone conversation of taking no step backward in regard to June 30 municipal elections.
This was in the course of an unwavering stance of great attention by the USA during the recent months.
On the day President Ilir Meta cancelled the Municipal Elections of June 30, the “Top Channel” reported that Reeker held a meeting at the Department of Euroasian Affairs to analyze the president’s decision.
On the next day, a spokesperson of the State Department told “Voice of America” that the State Department is following developments in Albania and is keeping contact with the relevant actors on the legal implications of the president’s decision.
Last Thursday, on the eve of the opposition’s national protest, the U. S. Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Daniel Koski was at the office of the opposition leaders Lulzim Basha and Monika Kryemadhi warning them of being classified as violent organizations in case of violence until July 1. It was the most radical U.S. message in the history of Albanian pluralism for them.
The U.S. warning was immediately reflected during Friday’s protest when no cracker was hurled by the protesters. /top-channel /a.g/p.s./
