President Meta abolishes decree on June 30 local election

TIRANA, June 8 /ATA/ – Albanian President Ilir Meta decided Saturday to abolish an earlier Presidential decree on holding the local government election on 30 June 2019.

In a press statement, the President of the Republic Ilir Meta said that the decision to call off the Presidential decree on the local election date was an attempt to solve the country’s political crisis

“Being deeply concerned of the critical political situation in the country as a result of failure of both sides to reflect and seek a solution to the situation; taking into consideration the urgent need to defuse tension and the risk of unpredictable escalation of the conflict in the country; assuming high constitutional and institutional responsibility, and being convinced that the protection of constitutional principles is more important than any legal term, in my capacity as the Head of State and abiding by the oath to maintaining stability, social peace and national unity at any cost, I have decided to abolish Decree No.10928, dated 05.11.2018, on the conduct of local government elections on 30 June 2019,” President said in his statement.
