TIRANA, May 18 /ATA/ – The Central Election Commission (CEC) said Saturday it did not endorse the candidacy of an independent candidate to run for the position of the mayor of Himara, southern Albania, citing the decriminalization law.
Albania’s central election body said that it had turned down the registration of independent candidate Dhionisios Alfred Petro Beleri to run for the position of Himara mayor in 30 June local election after it turned out that the candidate was subject to the decriminalization law.
Beleri had been earlier registered to seek election as mayor of Himara, but the verification showed he had served a 3-year prison sentence on incitement to hatred charges ten years ago and as such he is subject to the decriminalization law.
