TIRANA, April 1 /ATA/ – The acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj called on 38 Honorary Consuls in Albania to submit diplomatic license plates to receive the new ones under the law.
“Now is the time to undo a problem. There are 48 Honorary Consuls in total in our country, that enjoy diplomatic privileges, in which their work can be referred to as a diplomatic mission. We have the honor to welcome the Honorary Consuls here, well-known and different businessmen, media owners, political analysts who have been appointed in Albania as Honorary Consuls from different countries, almost from every continent of the world and covered by diplomatic immunity to perform their function in Albania and beyond, the same goes for the Ambassadors and diplomatic corps accredited in Albania. Our country would be really honored if the activity of these Honorary Consuls would be framed within the law,” Cakaj said.
“Honorary Consul’s treatment with license plates is regulated by the State Ceremonial of the Republic of Albania in chapter VII; Privileges and Immunities, law point 5.8 underlines, the Honorary Consuls regardless of their citizenship, exclusively for official purposes to use a common national license plate, with a distinguishing sign displayed on the far left or far right on the registration plate. Actually, there are 38 Honorary Consuls in our country that have violated this law,” Cakaj emphasized.
Also, acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj added that, “these measures are being taken in the light of strengthening of the dignity of the Albanian diplomatic passport, as for years it has raised doubts in many locals mind.”//a.i/
