PM Rama commemorates 140th anniversary of Albanian League of Prizren

TIRANA, June 10 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama commemorated Sunday the 140th anniversary of  the Albanian League of Prizren, the first Albanian nationalist organization.

“We mark today the 140th anniversary of the Albanian League of Prizren with its simple, yet meaningful message echoing yesterday, today and forever: never virtue and much less fate have abandoned an united Albania,” PM Rama wrote on his Facebook page, commemorating the foundation of the first nationalist organization, which urged Albanians to intensify their efforts to win independence from the Ottoman Empire, an event that would occur in 1912.

“This day also reminds us that we are approaching the end of the first half of the Skanderbeg Year, the accomplishments and the unique events of which are taking place throughout the Albanian nation in its ancestral lands and in the Diaspora,” Rama added.

The League of Prizren, officially the League for the Defense of the Rights of the Albanian Nation, was an Albanian political organization officially founded on June 10, 1878 in the old historic town of Prizren.

The League of Prizren was the first Albanian administratively, politically and militarily organized movement since Skanderbeg’s time. Forced under specific circumstances of 1878, Albanians called for a nationwide Assembly. On June 10, 1878, in Prizren, the Assembly opened the doors to welcome delegates from the four Vilayets of Albania: Shkodra, Manastir, Ioannina and Kosovo.
