Italian historian: Skanderbeg myth, hidden reality

TIRANA, June 6 /ATA/-On Wednesday, it was held in Tirana the International Albanological Conference dedicated to the figure of the national hero of Albania George Kastrioti Skanderbeg.

“Skanderbeg represents the culminating point of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman occupation”, said the Italian Professor Pietro Corrao in an interview to ATA following his speech delivered to the 8th session of the Conference.

Further on, Corrao highlighted the fact that modern historians don’t deal with the figure of an individual, but with the period and the society where this individual had an impact. “That was the topic of my speech delivered today”, said Corrao.

Further on, he added that Albanian resistance was followed by some new realities in the Balkans. And he mentioned Arbëreshi movement to Italy.

Corrao also evaluated events like the International Albanological Conference considering it rather important occasion to exchange views on culture, opinions and face the material of all the scholars on the Medieval times and Skanderbeg figure.

The International Albanological Conference is being held in the context of the pan-national year of Skanderbeg, the 550th anniversary of death of our national hero. It gives an opportunity to all scholars of Skanderbeg to present a certain topic on the epoch of Skanderbeg. /a.g/p.s./
