Amendments to Code of Penal Procedure aligned with EU standards, opposition allegations baseless

TIRANA, May 14 /ATA/ – By I. Vata/ – Vice Parliament Speaker Vasilika Hysi and chairman of Parliamentary Law Committee Ulsi Manja at a news conference from the hall of law committee stated that amendments to Code of Penal Procedure have been developed in line with European standards.

In his remarks, the chairman of Law Committee said that for several days now the parliament of Albania and justice reform have been unjustly targeted by the parties of opposition. Public opinion is well aware of DP’s stand and its boycott of the second approach to justice reform, however we do not get the stand of SMI which has been present in committee of justice reform.

Parliament of Albania reviews the legal initiative according to the rule, yet parliamentary practice involves consultation with the public and the interested parties, academia and experts, Manja said.

For her part, Parliament Speaker Vasilika Hysi said that by shedding light on article 491, point f, we abide by resolution of European Convention on extradition.

The duty of Law Committee members is based on four aspects. Aligning the law with international standards and European Convention on extradition. We make sure the draft laws are in compliance with
Constitution of Albania. We check up on draft proposals pertaining to the laws, protection of Albanian citizens’ rights inside and outside the country. In this context, we found that the draft law did not reflect to a large extent the additional protocol of European Convention on extradition and asked its review to bring it into line with the convention on extradition,” Hysi said.
