TIRANA, March 16 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ Reforestation of Vlora hills with roughly 50 thousand olive saplings will regenerate the green crown of the touristic city damaged by fires and mankind over years.
The olive tree has been the symbol of the coastal city, therefore Vlora municipality has undertaken this initiative in the framework of national reforestation plan which involves the plantation of 20 mln and 200 thousand trees until 2020.
According to municipality plans, the olive trees will be planted in the hills affected by deforestation. Vlora mayor Dritan Leli says that the citizens who live on the hills will be granted olive saplings per square meters.
The prefect Flamur Mamaj told ATA that this initiative has been endorsed by all public entities, businesses and citizens.
The initiative is aimed at expanding the green cover not only in the city but all across the region. Free distribution of olive trees among the citizens will take place in the areas that have been damaged by fires. The prefecture has supported the municipality in this initiative by engaging the institutions in reforestation efforts.
Official estimates put the age of ancient olive trees in our country at around 3000 years with a perimeter of up to 3 meters.
Olive growing is a tradition in Albania, while the Albanian brand of extra virgin olive oil is much in demand on world markets.
