TIRANA, March 15 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – The best way to combat poverty is to create jobs and not to provide social assistance as prolonged social welfare schemes lead to more poverty and misery, the Deputy Prime Minister Senida Mesi said during the debate over the new social assistance program in the parliament on Thursday.
“The cash welfare should be provided to the poor and most vulnerable people only, while creation of new jobs and employment should be the only alternative to those non-eligible for the social welfare benefit,” Mesi stated.
She accused opposition of playing politics with poverty.
“There is a fundamental difference between us and the opposition regarding the poor families. We are seeking to ensure their inclusiveness in the country’s economic life and reforms are being implemented to lift these families out of poverty,” Mesi said.
According to her, the previous government of the today’s opposition left behind a society of social inequalities.
Increasing employment rate is a top government priority, Mesi said.
