Effective management of Drin River cascade minimizing impact of floods

TIRANA, March 7 /ATA/- The effective management of the river cascade is minimizing the impact of floods, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, said on Wednesday as he inspected the Vau i Dejes hydro power plant, one of the three major hydro power plants over Drin River cascade, in north and the northeastern part of Albania.

Heavy rains and warm temperatures swept most parts of the country, causing the water inflow to the river cascade increase to over 2500 cubic meters per second and pushing up the water level in three major dams.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Energy closely monitored the situation how Albanian Power Corporation was managing the situation he said was triggered by the abnormal water inflows.

“Thanks to effective management of all water catchments long the river’s cascade, the water discharge is estimated at around 1450 cubic meters per second. Should the cascade was not effectively managed then floods would have been massive, similar to those the Albanian citizens have experienced back in 2010,” Gjiknuri said.

Gjiknuri noted that most recent floods that have affected certain areas in the region of Shkodra were not triggered by the water discharges from the hydropower plants on the Drin River cascade.
