TIRANA, Feb 13 /ATA/ – The Agreement between Albania and European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) which was signed on Monday by Albania’s Minister of Interior Fatmir Xhafaj and EU Commissioner on Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, has resonated with a number of foreign media outlets.

Since 2014 the Albanian government has seized hundreds of tonnes of drugs and destroyed millions of cannabis sativa plants, Euronews writes.
Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government has set tackling the country’s illegal marijuana production as a main goal.

The agreement with Albania must now be endorsed by the EU’s 28 member states and formally signed at a later date. Once the Agreement enters into force, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency will be able to carry out operational activities and deploy teams in the regions of Albania that border the EU, according to Neweurope.

Visiting EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos hailed Albania for reaching the agreement “that will serve as a role model for similar arrangements … with other partners in the Western Balkans, Associated Press is quoted as saying.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency on Monday signed the draft status agreement with Albania on border management, the Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) writes.
Avramopoulos expressed the hope that Albania becomes an EU member soon, as it is part of Europe and “shares the same challenges in the struggle against illegal migration, the better management of EU borders and the adequate handling of organised crime and terrorism, the Greek observer writes.
The agreement to assist Albania in border management and also deploy teams there to respond to potential flows of migrants has hit the headlines of bussinesinsider, news agencies like Reuters or ANSA./ /a.jor./sm/
