Government to support agro-tourism development in Kukes

TIRANA, Feb 10 /ATA/-By I. Vata/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the government’s new initiatives and subsidy schemes to support agriculture, farming, agro-tourism and rural development across the country during a meeting with local farmers in Kukes, northeast Albania, on Saturday.

The government head was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Niko Peleshi, and Kukes Mayor, Bashkim Shehu.

Minister of Agriculture said that government will provide subsidies for new butcher shops, milk collection centres and an array of agro-tourism investments.

Peleshi noted that four villages in the northeastern region of Kukes have been picked by the government among the 100 villages across the country that will have their infrastructure upgraded in a bid to make them agribusiness oriented by promoting local agriculture products.

“Four villages in the region of Kukes, namely Shishtavec, Shtiqen, Valbona and Cahani, have been selected as part of the 100 villages under the integrated rural development project to promote agro-tourism development,” Agriculture Minister said, referring the ‘100 villages’ project that will upgrade the selected villages’ infrastructure and public services and promote agro-tourism by offering incentives and grants to support local characteristic agriculture products.

Peleshi also said that farmers will be eligible to receive funding from the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency for projects on cultivation of hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts and medicinal herbs.

On his part, PM Rama urged farmers to cooperate with each other and join their fragmented land parcels so that they can benefit funding, pledging that government will support  all varieties of crops that possess high export potential.
